Written by Someone Who Keeps Coming Back

First Time Thailand started as the notes I kept sending friends before their first trips.

My entire extended family has lived in Bangkok, near Asok, since before it became the Asok we know now. Coming back every other year to visit them and see friends, I have watched the neighborhood change around them over the last few decades.

What to Do in Bangkok, Day by Day

The secret to a great first time in Bangkok is rhythm: one outdoor activity, one air-conditioned break, and one unforgettable meal. Build every day around those three and the heat never wins.

What to Eat in Thailand

Thai food is reason enough for the trip. These are the dishes worth seeking out on a first visit, with their spice level so you can order with confidence. Names are romanized the way they appear on most English menus.

Rooftop Bars at Golden Hour

One of Bangkok’s signature experiences is a drink in the sky as the city lights come on. These landmark rooftops are the easiest to reach on a first trip.

63rd floor
Sky Bar at lebua
State Tower. The gold-domed bar made famous by The Hangover Part II, high over the river.
61st floor
Vertigo & Moon Bar
Banyan Tree. An open-air deck and cocktail bar with a 360-degree view of the city.
78th floor
Sky Beach at Mahanakhon
King Power Mahanakhon. One of the city’s highest rooftops, just above the glass Skywalk tray.
49th floor
Octave Rooftop
Marriott Sukhumvit. A three-level, 360-degree rooftop that is livelier and a little less formal.
Dress code
Smart casual. Most rooftops turn away shorts, tank tops, and flip-flops at the door.
Timing
Arrive around 6pm to catch the sunset, then stay on as the skyline lights up.
Budget & weather
Drinks are a splurge, often 350 baht and up. In the rainy season a storm can close the deck, so keep a back-up plan.

About this guide

Written by Belle, a Thai American who travels to Thailand every other year and has family in Bangkok. Everything here comes from my own visits unless the text says otherwise. Prices and journey times are typical cases rather than quotes, so recheck anything time-sensitive before you pay.
